Jerusalem

Jerusalem is the heart of any trip to Israel: the Old City with its four quarters, the Western Wall, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and the Temple Mount within one square kilometre. Allow 2–3 days for the essentials: one for the Old City, one for museums and the market, and one for Bethlehem or the Dead Sea.

What to see

  • The Old City: the Western Wall, the Jewish Quarter and the Cardo, the Via Dolorosa, the Holy Sepulchre, the Temple Mount (non-Muslims: mornings, Sun–Thu).
  • Mount of Olives — a view over the whole Old City, best at sunset.
  • Yad Vashem — the Holocaust memorial.
  • The Israel Museum with the Dead Sea Scrolls.
  • Mahane Yehuda market — food by day, bars by night.
  • The City of David just outside the Old City walls.

Getting there

  • From Ben Gurion Airport — a direct train to Yitzhak Navon station, 25–30 minutes; at night and on Shabbat, a taxi or transfer.
  • Around town — the light rail; public transport stops on Shabbat.

Where to stay

  • Jaffa Gate and Mamilla — walking distance to the Old City.
  • City centre (Ben Yehuda, Jaffa Road) — cafés and the light rail.
  • German Colony — quieter, with restaurants.

More — where to stay.
